Comprehensive Study Guide

FRCPath Examination Guide

Embarking on your FRCPath exams is one of the biggest steps in your haematology training. This comprehensive guide demystifies the exams and provides a practical framework for success.

It's a challenging journey, there's no doubt about it, but it is absolutely achievable. Think of these exams not just as hurdles, but as the process that solidifies your knowledge and skills, preparing you for the responsibilities and rewards of being a consultant.

This guide is designed to demystify the exams and give you a practical framework for how to prepare.

Part 1: Building Your Foundation

Knowledge Foundation

The FRCPath Part 1 is all about demonstrating the breadth of your knowledge. This is where you prove you have the essential facts and understanding of the entire curriculum at your fingertips.

The exam is held in a single sitting, and you need to pass both papers to succeed.

Content Distribution

The content is split evenly, with about 25% dedicated to each of these four pillars:

  • Blood Transfusion
  • General Haematology (including lab management)
  • Haematological Oncology
  • Haemostasis & Thrombosis

Exam Format

Paper 1: Compulsory Essays

  • 4 compulsory essays covering:
    • Blood Transfusion
    • General Haematology
    • Haematological Oncology
    • Haemostasis & Thrombosis

Paper 2: Multiple Choice & Extended Matching

  • 50 'best-of-five' MCQs
  • 75 Extended Matching Questions (EMQs)
  • No negative marking

Part 2: Thinking and Acting Like a Consultant

If Part 1 is about what you know, Part 2 is about how you use what you know. This exam assesses your clinical judgment, problem-solving skills, and ability to function as a safe, competent consultant. It's held over three demanding days and consists of three written papers and a crucial oral examination. You must pass every single component in one sitting.

Written Papers

Paper 1: Morphology (Short Answer)

  • 90 minutes
  • Up to 12 questions based on microscope slides, flow plots, or QA data
  • Quick, accurate interpretation and focused answers

Paper 2: Morphology (Long Cases)

  • 90 minutes
  • 3 full cases to analyse
  • Write comprehensive reports, make diagnoses, and outline management plans

Paper 3: Coagulation & Transfusion

  • 2-hour paper
  • Complex problem-solving in key areas
  • Interpret lab results and guide patient management

The Oral Examination (Viva)

This is often the most daunting part, but it's your chance to really shine.

  • 60-minute exam
  • Split into two 30-minute sessions
  • Different pairs of examiners each time
  • Covers full breadth of curriculum (Coagulation, Transfusion, General Haematology, Haem-Onc)

They want to see your thought process: how you approach a problem, how you justify your decisions, and how you communicate your plans.

Bridging the Knowledge Gap

The UK Curriculum is Your Bible: Use it as your revision guide and map your knowledge against it.

Master UK Guidelines (CRITICAL): Base answers on UK practice:

  • BSH (British Society for Haematology)
  • NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence)
  • SHOT (Serious Hazards of Transfusion)
